I cannot tell you how many times I have talked to folks from different states…
Your company is growing, and you realize that you need to bring another resource to keep up with your growing industry. Though this is an exciting place to be in, it can also be terrifying. Though this can be a daunting process, rest assured that there are some things that you can do to make this process less stressful.
Identify the position you are hiring for
Though this seems like a no brainer, it is probably the most important step in the hiring process and can also be the most difficult. You need to ask yourself; Where do you/does your company have areas of opportunity? What voids need to get filled? What areas do you need assistance with? What is this person you hire going to do? You need to get very specific at this stage, it will help with the rest of the process.
Identify the type of person you need to hire
Notice I said “need” here not “want.” It is imperative to identify characteristics of an individual that you need to bring into your organization and not settle for anyone who does not meet these needs. Once you identify who you need to hire you can now post your position.
Utilize your resources
Though you may have not personally hired anyone before and you do not have an HR department to assist you, there are many resources out there that can help you. If you have the time, you can use sites like LinkedIn and indeed. If you need further assistance, there are sources like ZipRecruiter that can be of service as well.
Once you have identified the position and person and posted the position, be patient. Look through all the resumes and choose the ones that you need. Make sure you take your time coming up with poignant questions that can draw out the answers you need to determine who you are going to bring into your organization to ensure your success.
